Importance of fiber composite technology in construction

The Lightweight Construction and Design Department (KLuB) of the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany, hosted a symposium on composite in construction.
On 18 and 19 February, 150 experts from research and industry in the field of fiber composite materials met for the national symposium Sampe Deutschland. This year the experts discussed questions related to construction with fiber composite materials.
One thing was clear to all participants: construction plays an important role in fiber composite technology, and poses various challenges. In the discussion special attention was accorded to fiber-composite-appropriate load introduction, for example concentrated load transmission at specific points in thin-walled FRP structures. The speakers from the TU Darmstadt also showed how fiber composites can improve the drive train, and provided a compelling insight into the application of these modern materials in the machine tool industry. Among other topics, the companies also spoke about their practical experience regarding the continuous production of structural profiles.
Innovation Awards 2015
On the evening of the symposium Prof. Dr.- Ing. Frank Henning awarded the Sampe Innovation Awards for outstanding scientific work in the field of fiber composites.
Martin Andreas Knoch from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology received an award for his master’s thesis with the title "Simulation of warpage of locally-reinforced CF/PPS laminates".
Moritz Käß from the Institute of Aircraft Design of the University of Stuttgart was also awarded for his bachelor’s thesis entitled "Characterization of crack propagation and experimental investigation of a crack stopper concept for adhesivelybonded CFRP joints subjected to fatigue stress".
